Game Overview

Polarity™ is easy to learn, exciting to play, and strategically challenging enough to keep you playing for many years to come.

Polarity is suitable for beginner players of 7 or older - but will provide a deep, intriguing and ongoing challenge to more advanced players. Polarity encourages the testing of new tactics each time you play, and is never the same game twice. Every time you play, you will learn something new about the game.

Utilizing the forces of magnetism, players take turns placing hovering magnetic discs on the board in order to impose chaos on their opponent. This chaos, which causes discs that are in play to come together in a flash of magnetic frenzy, results in scoring opportunities. Stacks of more than one disc (towers) are counted as points and the player with the most points at the end of a game wins.

For a full look at the rules, you can download the Polarity Rule Book, and take a look at the Polarity Strategy Guide for advanced play tips, variants, FAQs, illustrated scenario guides, and more. Both files are in Adobe PDF format.

How the game is played

Divide up the Discs

Begin by dividing the Black and White player discs, giving each player 26 discs.

Choose who is Black and who is White

To determine who gets to play Black and who gets to play White, flip the RED disc. Instead of heads and tails, the faces of the red disc represent Magnetic North or Magnetic South.

On the RED Center disc, North is represented by the line, and South, by the dot:

Toss the RED disc as you would toss a coin and allow one player to call “North” or “South” while the disc is in the air. If the player who called the toss wins the toss, he/she may choose to play with Black discs or White discs. With the winning side up, the red disc is placed into the center of the mat. White discs are magnetically South and Black discs are magnetically North, and White ALWAYS plays first.

Build your Foundations

The White player places 5 discs anywhere on the play mat. Again, these are the Foundation Discs. As long as his/her discs are within the outer limit of the circle that surrounds the play area, the placement of discs is legal. More advanced players may use different types of placement methods to try to gain a strategic advantage.

Once the White player has placed his/her discs, the Black player may place their discs. This laying of foundation discs is the ONLY time during the game that a player may directly place a Foundation Disc flat onto the mat. Foundation Discs can be created later in the game by intentional or accidental conversion. A mat that is ready to go usually looks like this:

Let the fun begin!

Now that each player has placed five discs of their own color flat on the mat, the White player may place a hovering "Standing Disc" on the board. To do this, FEEL the magnetic force that builds up between the disc that is in your hand, and the Foundation Disc. This area between the discs acts like a magnetic cushion, upon which Standing Discs will hover. Once you have successfully placed one of your discs, your opponent may take their turn.

Build Territory, gain ground, crowd your opponent, encourage Chaos!

Players take turns, playing discs in ways that force their opponent to make mistakes which cause discs to attach together. When disc come together, the player who did not cause the action gets to capture the connecting discs and turn them into points.

Discs that fall are left to lay where they fell, while discs that snap together can be captured as points.

Sometimes during play, it becomes necessary to convert leaning pieces into Foundation Discs. This gives you more places to play another leaning disc - or to encroach on your opponents territory Players take turns, playing discs in ways that force their opponent to make mistakes which cause discs to attach together. When disc come together, they form towers. These towers can be converted into points.

Gradually, players develop the ability to 'see' the magnetic fields that are at play on the board. This ability gives players an edge by allowing them to predict how the placement of a disc will effect other pieces on the board.

The more you play Polarity, the more you will master the forces of magnetism to defeat your opponent!
