Choose Same Polarity as Red Disc

By: opie

This is a well-known tip, but I didn’t see it posted here. The flip of the red disc determines its polarity during the game. For example, if you flip it and get | (north) you should choose to be Black (north) and the opposite goes for South with White. The reason for this is that it if you are the same polarity as the red disc your discs will only push the red disc away instead of be attracted to it. It is easier to lose by touching the red disc than it is to lose by pushing the red disc off the center dot completely, so you thusly gain an advantage by playing as the same polarity as the red disc.
But you all knew that, didn’t you? And you shouldn’t have to worry about touching the red disc anyway because you are all skilled players, right… ? ;-)

I have to agree with PG on this one, I will always take black so that I can choose how close to my opponent I want to be. In my estimation this benefit FAR outweighs that of having the same polarity as the red disk.

I usually like going first, because I feel that I have many advantages of going first.
Such as…
I can gain strategic places early in the game, and have a better chance at causing a distruption in the force of others.

Haha, I was actually reading the rulebook last night and it actually has this same tip as a tip in the rule booklet. And you wrote the rule book didn’t you? Haha… so are you disagreeing with yourself too?
But I see where you are coming from… I have never seen anyone touch the red disc by accident in a real game… so I guess there are more important reasons why you could choose a certain color rather than just to be the same as the red disc.
Point taken ;-)

Sorry, opie, but I can’t quite agree. As you point out, skilled players never touch red. I have only seen a red-touch in beginner games.
As for winning the toss, I will often choose to be Black no matter what. Why? So I can go second. WHY? So that I can place my discs after my opponent places thiers. WHY? So that I can be aggressive and play an offensive game. Does this always work in my favor? No, but I do tend to be an aggressive player.
